School Officer Response to Child Abuse, Exploitation & Trafficking
Children and adolescents who are being abused or exploited often show warning signs long before a case is formally reported. School Resource Officers are uniquely positioned to recognize those indicators early, intervene appropriately, and help protect vulnerable students before situations escalate further.
“School Officer Response to Child Abuse, Exploitation & Trafficking” is an intensive one-day training course designed specifically for School Resource Officers, campus police, and law enforcement personnel assigned to educational environments. This course provides officers with the practical knowledge and investigative awareness needed to identify, document, and respond to cases involving physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, grooming behaviors, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation involving minors.
Participants will learn how abuse and exploitation commonly present within school settings and how offenders use manipulation, secrecy, coercion, technology, and grooming tactics to target victims. Officers will examine behavioral, physical, emotional, and environmental indicators commonly associated with abuse and exploitation, while also learning how trauma impacts victim behavior, disclosure, memory, and cooperation.
This course emphasizes real-world application and operational response. Officers will learn how to properly manage initial disclosures, conduct trauma-informed interactions, preserve critical evidence, and coordinate effectively with school administrators, child protective services, advocacy centers, and investigative units. The training also reinforces mandatory reporting requirements, constitutional considerations, and legal standards to ensure cases are handled professionally, ethically, and in a manner capable of withstanding judicial scrutiny.
